Downtown Reedsport Main Street The 1 0-Day Noah's Flood
GARDINER
Steady rains began Friday 1 Dec. 18 1 1994 in the Lower Umpqua area and di,d not subside unti I Sunday 1 Dec. 27. During these ten days 13.20 inches of rain feII • In addition to this 1 unusually high temperatures in the mountains caused a heavy run-off from the winter snowpack. Further aggravating this situation were extremely high tides and strong westerly winds which prevented run-off of high waters.
It is beIieved that this flood exceeded all others recorded since1861, at which time the entire community of Sco-ttsburg was wiped out.In downtown Reedsport the flood waters remained for three days, finally subsiding the evening of Christmas Eve. At the main inter section of Fourth Street and Fir Avenue, the waters reached a depth of eight feet on Wednesday, December 23.
About 325 homes and 50 businesses and other establishments were flooded for the three day period just before Christmas. All thre-e drugstores were flooded out and a II but one small restaurant. The Post Office wos forced into emergency quarters on the flat, to take care of the Christmas rush mai I.
No one could believe that this flood would be so much higher than the many previous floods they have been thro gh, so con sequently, by the time the realization hit home, it was too late to put up goods or evacuate anything but the people themselves. We were extremely lucky to have only one death which was at tributed directly to the flood.
